New book at LV.Buch: ‘Brücken bauen - Für ein besseres Miteinander von Bürgern und Bauern’ published by Landwirtschaftsverlag

Landwirtschaftsverlag is publishing a new book entitled: ‘Brücken bauen - Für ein besseres Miteinander von Bürgern und Bauern. The success of the Commission for the Future of Agriculture - and its failure?’.

The book by renowned agricultural journalists Rainer Münch and Ludger Schulze Pals offers in-depth insights into the work of the Commission on the Future of Agriculture. In July 2021, the commission presented a visionary final report on sustainable agriculture and nutrition in Germany. Despite broad approval from agricultural and non-agricultural circles, the recommendations are still awaiting political implementation. Neither the grand coalition under Chancellor Angela Merkel nor the traffic light coalition under Chancellor Olaf Scholz have adopted the proposals. In their book, the authors ask why this is the case and who bears responsibility for it.

‘We are proud to have such a topical and important work in our programme,’ says Jana Neubert, Head of LV.Buch. ‘The authors, Rainer Münch and Ludger Schulze Pals, use the example of agriculture to describe what it takes to overcome seemingly irreconcilable professional differences and forge workable compromises. Using the example of the Future Commission for Agriculture, they explain how political processes take place and how decisions are reached. And they show how things can work better in the future.’

A year ago, there were major farmer demonstrations in Germany. Farmers feel overwhelmed by bureaucracy, overburdened by the demands of environmental and animal protection and left alone by politicians. The Commission for the Future of Agriculture has put forward proposals on how to untangle this tangle of different interests and find solutions that are accepted by all and economically viable. Rainer Münch and Ludger Schulze Pals trace the chronology of the Commission's work, from the reasons for its establishment to the failure to implement the results. ‘The book ‘Building Bridges’ shows that it is worth taking this path. The next federal government has the chance to pick up the thread again,’ adds Neubert. ‘The authors' detailed analysis and constructive suggestions provide valuable ideas on how to tackle this organisationally.’ With ‘Brücken bauen’, Landwirtschaftsverlag delivers another publication that addresses contemporary and forward-looking topics and thus makes an indispensable contribution to the discussion on the reorganisation of agriculture in Germany.

The book is now available in stores.
