The German Corn Committee (DMK) has awarded Dr Hauke Ferdinand Deeken from the top agrar editorial team the DMK sponsorship award for his dissertation on emissions from silage production in Bonn. The award is presented annually in mid-November at the annual conference of the professional organisation.
Emissions from silage production have been little studied to date. Deeken's work at the University of Bonn shows that the emission effects of silage are lower than previously assumed and provides a key basis for more sustainable silage management. „The results are clear. In German dairy farming, greenhouse gas emissions from maize silage storage account for only around 0.004% of the carbon footprint of one kilogram of milk.“, says Hauke Deeken, presenting his findings. „However, the low emissions in the silo represent only part of the emissions generated during silage production. For example, climate-relevant emissions during the cultivation of silage maize are 1,000 to 2,000 times higher than storage emissions.“, says Deeken, putting the measurement data into context. He also derives a recommendation for practical application: „For farmers, I recommend the professional use of silage additives. As these reduce feed losses, emissions across the entire process chain – from corn grain to feed intake – can be reduced by up to 13%.“
„Hauke Deeken's dissertation impresses with its scientific rigour and high level of innovation. It closes key research gaps in silage production and enables a more precise assessment of its climate impact. The results provide important impetus for sustainable silage management.“, says Prof. Dr. Enno Bahrs, University of Hohenheim and Chairman of the German Maize Committee, highlighting the high utility value of the work.
„We are delighted for Hauke. The award demonstrates what Hauke is all about: providing practical value and support for farmers. That's why he is the perfect fit for our team at top agrar.“, add top agrar editors-in-chief Guido Höner and Matthias Schulze Steinmann.
