Lebensmittel Praxis (LP), with a circulation of just under 59,000 copies (IVW 2nd quarter 2025), is by far the highest-circulation German trade publication for the food retail and food industry, and is now undergoing a revamp: LP is being published this week with a new layout and new sections. The industry experts at the LP editorial team are providing even more up-to-date insights, even more accurate analyses, and even clearer opinions. They are sharpening the profile of Lebensmittel Praxis as a source of inspiration for the food industry, surprising readers with new perspectives and crystal-clear lines of argument, and creating unusual approaches to important topics in the industry.

'In times of fake news and superficial social media debates, there is a greater need than ever for thoroughly researched facts and journalistic analysis. In addition to the tried-and-tested cover story, this will be provided in future by new formats such as ‘Draufsicht’ (Top View), ‘Preise und Daten’ (Prices and Data) and the new section ‘Handelsstrategien’ (Trade Strategies). Anyone who doesn't find new inspiration here isn't looking for it,' says Hendrik Varnholt, editor-in-chief of Lebensmittel Praxis.

In the current issue, LP uses satellite images in its “Draufsicht” section to explain, for example, why chocolate is so expensive and what price developments have to do with gold. In the “Handelsstrategien” section, LP shows how large retailers Kaufland and Marktkauf are responding to the fact that consumers are increasingly buying non-food items online. Another new feature is the constant monitoring of developments in raw material and sales prices as well as market sentiment. In future, LP readers will be able to find out about the market situation in a matter of seconds thanks to easy-to-understand graphics.

“With the new Lebensmittel Praxis, we feel even more in tune with retailers, for example through the new ‘Readers’ Questions' section, in which experts answer the burning questions of the industry,” promises Varnholt. LP also takes a closer look at changes in the German food retail sector: In the “Open and Closed” section, it provides a comprehensive overview of store openings, closures, and ownership changes. Proven features remain unchanged. These include the “Retail Practice” and “Manufacturers & Product Ranges” sections. The aim is clear: LP provides information, best practice examples, and advice that are of immediate benefit to those responsible in retail and industry.

LP is also becoming more opinionated—for example, with its new “Widerrede” (Contradiction) section, in which external experts comment on controversial industry topics. In the current issue, the section focuses on the Cartel Office's decision to prohibit the large-scale slaughterhouse operator Tönnies from acquiring the Vion slaughterhouses in southern Germany.

Lebensmittel Praxis also places even greater focus on the people in the industry. The editorial team has moved the “Personalities” section to a more prominent position and expanded its coverage of the careers of industry decision-makers. In addition, the new “Shopping with...” format presents personalities in an unusual way.

“Artificial intelligence (AI) is changing how people use media. Nevertheless, magazines such as Lebensmittel Praxis are still needed. They offer something that AI cannot: inspiration by confronting readers with new and unusual ideas. Our relaunch is geared precisely toward this,” says LP editor-in-chief Varnholt.

The revamped magazine design supports the content's high standards. It is deliberately simple, clearly structured for readers, and focuses on expressive cover images and lead photos. Subscribers will receive the first issue of Lebensmittel Praxis in its new format today, Friday, delivered to their door as usual. For everyone else, this issue is available free of charge as an e-paper. Feel free to take a look: https://lebensmittelpraxis.page.link/341r.
